Paid AAMD internship at MFIT for undergraduate students
Primary Department: Digital Media
Description:
The Museum at FIT (MFIT) is seeking an undergraduate student intern who will work with the Digital Media Department during summer-fall 2026. The Digital Media Department oversees MFIT's digital marketing and social media engagement, exhibition and education media projects, and online accessibility. Through the projects described below, the intern will gain hands-on experience and see how digital media supports both the operational and public-facing work of a museum.
Exhibition Related Project:
The intern will help develop, manage, and launch a crowd-sourced project called "We Love Dolls” (related to MFIT's fall exhibition Doll Dressing) that invites contributors to share their doll collections or memories through photos and text. The intern will collect and organize the submitted digital assets, publish the contributions online, and develop a social media plan to roll out during the run of the exhibition. Through this project, they will learn museum standards and best practices in creating short-form social media content such as Instagram posts and reels.
Accessibility:
The internship also includes learning about web accessibility standards through training sessions provided by FIT and then having the opportunity to gain first-hand experience applying the principles learned through captioning videos and managing digital assets for publication.
Other:
Additional learning opportunities will include conducting a video inventory, researching data visualization practices to develop exhibition evaluation reports, and doing bi-weekly research on and off campus to investigate how other museums engage with digital media online and in their galleries.
The intern will contribute to other communication and marketing activities during the course of their internship, many of which overlap with educational programs and curatorial initiatives. Together, these projects and activities will provide the intern with an understanding of audience engagement, both physical and digital.
The intern will be required to submit a written report summarizing the activities and results of the internship.
This is a 4-6 month internship position funded by the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) to engage undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds in order to encourage them to pursue a career in art museums.
