Academic Program Review

SUNY requires campuses to conduct periodic evaluations of each of its registered academic programs, and the process needs to meet or exceed the standards of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

FIT's Academic Program Review (APR) process provides programs with opportunities to reflect on their mission, learning goals, curriculum, operations, resources, and outcomes. The process runs on a five-year cycle, and consists of a self-study that is conducted by the program's faculty and an external review conducted by knowledgeable representatives from academic settings and industry. The self-study and external review assist in the development of action plans that help programs set priorities and plan for the future. These action plans guide the work to enhance the student experience and maintain high quality.

Through program review, FIT can also demonstrate that it continuously improves using thoughtfully gathered evidence. Review documents may serve as supporting documentation for accreditation, but each review is not judged by accreditors.

The process for program reviews include three components:

• A comprehensive self-study that examines all aspects related to the degree over a broad time frame that examines past history and looks towards the future.
• A review conducted by professional external to the College who have an expertise in the program under review. Reviewers read the self-study, visit the program for observation and discussion, and provide feedback and suggestions. The program may revise its action plan based on the external reviewer's findings.
• A Use of Results process, where the degree program works with their respective dean, the Office of Academic Affairs, and the Office of Curriculum to review and discuss the self-study and reviewers' findings to develop a final action plan that includes a timeline and a budget.
