Unacceptable & Acceptable Use

Unacceptable Uses

AI use is prohibited in the following situations.

AI must not be used in any way that contradicts FIT’s policies, legal requirements, or ethical standards. Users must not generate content that promotes or facilitates illegal activities or infringes on the copyright of others.  Community members should also be aware of how AI products may use the data provided to train their models and the associated risks to copyright and intellectual property that may result from their use.

AI may not be used to complete required training, assessments, or other obligations intended to measure personal knowledge or skills. It is critical to pause and ask yourself questions like, “What is this assignment/task actually meant to measure?” Understanding the purpose behind an assignment or task (whether it’s building knowledge, demonstrating a skill, or engaging in critical thinking) helps determine when AI is appropriate and when it undermines the learning process.

FIT data, personally identifiable information (PII), confidential records (e.g., student, employee, financial, or research data), or proprietary information may not be entered, uploaded, or shared with AI platforms.

This includes, but is not limited to, FERPA-protected information, contents of FIT emails, material under confidential review (such as research or funding proposals), and personally identifiable information.

AI tools should not be used to generate private or sensitive information.

This includes, but is not limited to, things like unpublished research, legal advice, hiring or employee decisions, coursework that is not permitted by the instructor, teaching materials that are not meant to be shared, or grading.

Avoid inputting someone else’s work into AI tools without their explicit permission.

This includes, but is not limited to, peer-reviewed writing, group assignments, instructional materials, presentation slides, internal reports, or training documents. Even without harmful intent, doing so can violate academic integrity, intellectual property rights, and trust.

Users must not use AI for malicious purposes including, but not limited to, creating harmful, defamatory or fraudulent content.

AI must not be used in any way that could result in exploitation, manipulation, or legal violations when engaging with individuals under the age of consent.

AI-generated insights, analyses, or recommendations must be reviewed and verified by a human before being used to inform FIT decisions.

AI should never be used to generate or automate legal documents, HR, or other business decisions, etc. without human oversight.

AI may not be used to create or engage with content that is discriminatory, misleading, harmful, or otherwise prohibited by FIT’s Code of Conduct or policies.

AI-generated depictions, imitations, or representations of specific people may not be used without their explicit consent.

Students struggling with personal or academic challenges are encouraged to contact the FIT Counseling Center for support.

Employees struggling with personal or work-related challenges, including stress, mental health concerns, or work-life balance, should utilize FIT’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for confidential support and resources.

AI must not be used for romantic, emotional, or companionship interactions.

AI should not be used as a substitute for professional counseling, therapy, or emotional support. It is important to seek guidance from qualified professionals for romantic, emotional, or mental health matters, rather than relying on AI tools for these sensitive areas.

AI should not be used to generate or automate legal documents, contracts, business decisions, or compliance-related communications without appropriate review.

AI-assisted content may not bear the FIT copyright, trademark, or logo, as AI tools may produce plagiarized or inaccurate content.

Using FIT resources, assignments, or projects to develop content for sale.

  • Monetizing AI-generated content that is created as part of coursework, internships, work-study jobs, or other roles tied to the college.
  • Engaging in commercial activity that leverages FIT affiliations, logos, or intellectual property alongside AI-generated content.
  • Personal use of AI tools for monetized creative work must be clearly separated from FIT-related responsibilities, roles, and resources.
  • Students and employees may not use generative AI tools to create or sell content for financial gain while acting in their capacity as a student or employee of FIT. This includes, but is not limited to:

Acceptable and Responsible Uses

Acceptable and responsible use comes with proper verification and oversight. AI should be used to assist users with their work, not to perform without supervision independently.

Users should meticulously review any output for content validity and other concerns. Effective use of AI includes writing prompts with care, reviewing/verifying/editing output, and providing feedback to the tool if the output is wrong, misleading, or biased. Users should always review, fact-check, edit/customize output, and acknowledge/cite usage when using AI-generated content for academic or professional work. Students should always review the AI Statement in each of their course syllabi and discuss any questions with their instructor.

AI use must comply with all FIT policies. Acceptable uses of AI tools may include, but are not limited to the following.

  • Drafting emails, letters, reports, or other written materials
  • Providing grammar and style suggestions
  • Generating instructional materials, study guides, templates, or other materials
  • Generation of or enhancement of  images, designs
  • Gathering general knowledge to enhance understanding of a concept
  • Summarizing research or creating outlines (AI use should be cited)
  • Brainstorming ideas for projects, problem-solving, or process improvements

  • Developing or debugging code (must be reviewed before deployment)
  • Creating templates for standard documents like meeting agendas or reports
